Richard "Doc" Upah, 85, of Belle Plaine passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine with Deacon Joe Behounek presiding. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 PM Wednesday at the Hrabak Funeral Home with a scripture service at 6:30 PM. Richard Charles Upah was born April 27, 1929 to Charles and Caroline (Dvorak) Upah. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Garnet Rhodes on December 26, 1950. They had three children. In 1986 he retired and they moved to Belle Plaine. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Garnet; one son, John (Mary Jo) Upah of Brooklyn; two daughters, Julie Wonrau of Belle Plaine and Joy (Barry) Osborn of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Andrea, Ben (Bev), and Jaye Upah, Jesse (Amanda Daughtrey) Wonrau and Jennifer (Tyler Kintzel) Wonrau; Sidney and Natalie Osborn; three great-grandchildren Divonnoi and Liam Upah, and Devon Wonrau. Born on the family farm near Chelsea, he spent most of his life living and working there. Richard spent many years working for the Belle Plaine Livestock Auction. He was a member of St. Joseph's and St. Michael's Catholic Church. He was also the maintenance man for St. Michael's. Dick was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was known by many of his hunting buddies as "Dead-Eye Dick." In his younger years, Richard was also a basketball, baseball, and softball player. He was an avid bowler, bowling in many state championships. Richard also had an extensive arrowhead collection and enjoyed hunting for them. Richard loved playing Bingo and spent many of his retirement years traveling to various communities to yell "BINGO!"
