Norman Ray Hoskey (affectionately known as "Tubby") of Chelsea, IA, was born March 21, 1921, in a farm home near Montour, IA. He was the son of Albert and Luella May (Weitzell) Hoskey of LeGrand. He passed away on January 3, 2014, at the age of 92, at Carrington Place in Toledo, IA, and was under the care of Iowa River Hospice. He grew up in Montour where he attended elementary school and in 1940, graduated from Montour High School. Norman married Ethel Downs in Edina, Missouri, on November 15, 1941; they had been married 70½ years when she passed away in April 2012. He was a trucker, school bus driver, and farmhand in the Montour area prior to his service in the US Army in 1944. Upon returning from the army, he was once again a school bus driver and also a depot agent for Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in Montour until they moved to a farm east of Tama in 1953. In 1956, they moved to a farm south of Montour, then in 1962, to a farm near State Center. In 1967, they purchased a farm between Chelsea and Belle Plaine where they continued to farm with their oldest son, LeRoy and his family. Norman especially enjoyed his family, and due to the proximity of many family members, enjoyed helping "raise" grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides farming, he also enjoyed traveling, especially on their motorcycle and in their little fifth-wheel camper. Norman and Ethel were revered and loved as sponsors of the Montour Methodist Youth Fellowship for many years and enjoyed welcoming many Montour and Belle Plaine youth to their farm and home. In addition, Norman also served many years in several capacities with the Tama County Farm Bureau and was a card-holding member of the Montour American Legion for nearly 70 years, serving as an officer and a member of the Color Guard. In Oct 2012, he and his granddaughter Carla, were able to visit Washington D.C. and the World War II Memorial with the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. He was preceded in death by his wife and four brothers, Arthur, Melvin, Lawrence, and Cleon. He is survived by two sons, six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great grandchildren. Their two sons are LeRoy (Karon) of Chelsea and Marvin (Karen) of Maryville, MO. LeRoy and Karon have three children: Mark (Kenne) of Chelsea, Tammy (Scott) Kolash of Belle Plaine, and Ron (Lynelle) of Chelsea. Each couple has two children: Mark and Kenne are the parents of Keaten and Kamryn; Tammy and Scott are the parents of Joseph and John; Ron and Lynelle are the parents of Erica and Jessica. Marvin and Sue Paxton Hoskey had three children: Mick (Annette) of Maryville, MO, Carla of Des Moines, and Monte (Kellie) of Maryville, MO. Mick has three step-children and three step-grandsons: Amber (Jake) Neaderhiser and sons, Drexell and Maximus of Parnell, MO; Adam (KaTrina) Kunkel and son Ian of Connell, WA; and Jaclyn Kunkel of Ashville, NC. Monte and Kellie are the parents of Megan and Alexis. Marvin's second wife (Karen) has three children and six grandchildren: Ryan Wake of Burnsville, MN; Laura Wake and four children, Heaven, River, Roman and Zion of Cape Girardeau, MO; and Shawn Wake, Owen and Evan of Maryville, MO. On May 26, 2014 at 1:30 PM, a Military Service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery, Montour, where his and Ethel's cremains will be laid to rest. Following the service, a Celebration of Life Open House will be held at the Montour Community Center from 3:00 - 8:00 PM. Cards may be sent to LeRoy Hoskey at 3143 350th St, Chelsea, IA 52215.
