Mildred A.
Horton
April 19, 1950 — August 4, 2024
Mildred "Midge" Ann Horton, 74 of Vining, IA, passed away August 4, 2024, at her home in the embrace of her loving husband.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Belle Plaine, IA. Private family burial will take place at Conesville Cemetery, Conesville, IA.
Midge was born April 19, 1950, to Alphons and Maureen (O'Neil) Graden in Hazen, ND. She was one of seven siblings, two boys and five girls. She attended Beulah High School in Beulah, ND and Mary College in Bismarck, ND. Midge married George Horton on July 5, 1975, after meeting as Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). George saw her and said "that girl needs someone to take care of her" and ironically Midge ended up taking care of him.
Midge's hobbies included travel with her good friend Sue, reading, sewing and hunting for treasures with George. She was always finding treasures to share with others. Midge put her personal faith into action by loving and accepting all people as they were. She was a generous unpretentious person who never complained. Midge was a quiet woman with a quick smile and a keen sense of humor who enjoyed a good neck rub, gardening, Halloween and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was known to put out the first Christmas card in the family every year.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, George; her brother, Norman; two sisters, Erin Klein, and Joann (Ahmad) Al-Absy; her brother-in-law, Terry Kraft; her sister-in-law, Susan Hill; and many nieces and nephews.
Midge was preceded in death by her parents, Alphons and Maureen; one brother, John; two sisters, Ruth Graden-Steckler and Dale Kraft; one sister-in-law, Faye Graden; and three brothers-in-law, Victor Klein, Fred Steckler and Jack Hill.
She was the ribbon that held a far-flung diverse family together and kept everyone apprised of all the family news.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center for research. Online condolences can be sent to www.neuhausfuneralservice.com
