Herbert Allan Gettle, 100, of Elberon, Iowa passed away Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama, Iowa.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at Christian Fellowship Church, Vining Iowa. Interment will follow at National Cemetery, rural Vining. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Herbert was born May 22, 1921 in Zealandia, Saskatchewan, Canada to Harry and Ina (Abbe) Gettle. Herb's parents had immigrated to Canada from Tama County to homestead. Herb was the sixth of seven children. Herb's childhood was filled with working hard on the farm, neighborhood get-togethers during the long winters, singing together as Harry played the organ and a fair number of practical jokes.

Herb enlisted in the US Navy shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed and served aboard the USS Nevada in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Following his discharge, he came to Iowa and began working for a farmer near Elberon. While working at the Rasmussen farm, he met a neighbor girl, Helen Cepelak. They began dating and were married January 29, 1947 at The Little Brown Church.

Herb and Helen farmed near Elberon until Helen's passing in 1984 after which Herb retired and moved to Elberon. In 1985 Herb married Flora Holm of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Flora died in 2002.

Herb enjoyed keeping bees, helping with the Elberon Boy Scout troop (for nearly 50 years), was a member of the Odd Fellows, the American Legion and the Gideons. He also served as an elder at the Vining Christian Fellowship Church. Herb had a deep personal faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and that faith guided his decisions and his life.

Herb is survived by his five children, Linda Schmidt of Grand Forks, ND, Douglas (Kristi) Gettle of Dulut , MN, Jeanne (Jon) Larson of Westby WI, Richard (Linda) Gettle of Elberon, IA and Randy Gettle of North Mankato, MN; sixteen grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
