Ellen Ruth
Suchy
April 27, 1929 — November 4, 2026
Ellen Ruth Suchy, 97, of Belle Plaine, IA passed away November 4, 2026 at the Belle Plaine Care Center.
Ellen Ruth was born April 27, 1929, to William and Mary (Junge) Thiessen in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She graduated from Elberon High School and went on to attend Paris Academy of Beauty in Cedar Rapids. In 1949, Ruth was united in marriage to Edwin Suchy in Elberon. Together, they made their home in Belle Plaine, where they raised their family.
Ruth was employed at Funk’s Seed and in the cafeteria at Belle Plaine Schools. She was also one of the first employees at Benco in Belle Plaine, where she remained until her retirement.
Together, Ruth and Edwin liked fishing, taking drives through the countryside, and spent many evenings enjoying music and dancing. Ruth was happiest when surrounded by her family. She was blessed with the opportunity to help raise her granddaughter, Kasey and treasured time spent caring for her great-granddaughters while Kasey was at work.
Ruth was a caring and compassionate woman who never turned away anyone in need. She had a kind heart, never spoke an ill word about anyone, and always made others feel welcome. She was truly a people person who found joy in making connections with those around her. During her time at the nursing home, she became affectionately known as “Grandma” to everyone. She loved sharing a good laugh with those passing by, often playfully “pitching butts” and calling out “goose” to bring a smile to their faces. Her warm personality, playful spirit, and genuine kindness made her special to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Barb; granddaughter, Kasey (Garrett) Landuyt; great-granddaughters, Madalyn and Ivy Marek; sister-in-law, Marlene Thiessen.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin (2005); son, William “Bill” (2024); infant daughters, Rita and Joy; brothers, Willard, Duane, Marvin “Skeeter”, La Voy “Bud”; sisters, Ina Mae Callahan and La Von Novak.
Private family graveside service will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine, IA.
